His statement melted the hearts of women everywhere.
It’s the scene where Jerry Maguire, played by Tom Cruise, stands across the room from his girlfriend, and in front of all of her friends says with emotion and passion,
“YOU COMPLETE ME.”
(and of course she follows with the famous line, “You had me at hello.”)
When I see that clip I join the masses, swooning (for a moment) at the thought of a handsome man saying that I complete him.

(don’t you just love the girlfriends in the background?!)
But after a moment of swooning, I shudder. Because if my love completes someone, then his love must also be able to complete me.
And as romantic as that thought appears to be, that sort of “completeness” in another person doesn’t really exist.
In our best times of relationship or success, we may feel a sense of this completeness and satisfaction in love, but like all things, it fades, it changes, it disappoints, it comes up short.
Jerry’s line is so powerful because it hits on a deep nerve:
WE WERE CREATED TO BE COMPLETE.
But our hearts were not made to be completed by any person, career, child, or dream. We were created to find our completeness in Christ.
Nothing and no one will satisfy that deep yearning we have to be made complete except Christ Himself. In our mess and stress and sin we feel the ache of emptiness. But our loving Father, sees that, and in His goodness He made a way for us to come near and find wholeness. Christ’s victory over death and brokenness is our invitation to life and completion.
He completes all that is missing in us, and in the world.
He completes us in a way that never fades, never changes, never disappoints, never comes up short.
Imagine this: Jesus walks out of the grave, finds you, looks straight into your eyes and says this:
“My child, (insert your name) I COMPLETE YOU. I am the Promise, the Power, and the Presence of the One who is Truth and Love and Healing; I AM all that you crave. The intensity of my unchanging love will complete you as you learn to trust Me; my Spirit is at work in you and through you, touching everything that is wrong and making it right. Receive the gift of closeness with Me and be made complete in God your Father; come to Me and be complete.”
It’s the most stunning (and real) love story you could ever conjure up.
“For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself by Him whether things on earth of things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy and blameless, and above reproach in His sight–.” Colossians 1:19-22
